Today was a big anniversary for me and the crack team (me and the dog.) One year ago he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The nasty tumor on jis chest continues to grow to epic proportions. I keep expecting an alien parasite to burst from his chest and kill one of the members of the crew of the starship. What was supposed to finish him off was lung cancer, which appears to have been misdiagnosed.
Having been told a year ago that he might only be around for a couple of weeks I made some adjustments in our lives. Arthritis. You are now banned from trying to negotiate staircases. I appreciate the way he tried to make it to the basement to perform bodily functions. But, sweet poochie, if you collapse you weigh far too freaking much for me to get you back to ground level on my own. And for 11 1/2 months now I've been sleeping on the living room floor so that he doesn't feel the need to climb upstairs to be on a bed next to me.
I consider myself to be extremely fortunate in life. Great family. Great job. Just happened to be born in the greatest country on the planet. No mortgage. And the miracle that is my dog.
So this weekend was a celebration of his life and lots of reflection. For a dog that should be by all rights dead he's given a lot of mileage and doggie love. This in turn led me to searching out Lee Greenwod's God Bless the USA on YouTube. Replaying it dozens of times at high volume hopefully had the side benefit of annoying the asshole neighbors, but mainly it focused me on civic pride.
I AM proud to be an American. Eleven years of evidence cannot be denied. And the fact that Lucky Ace won't let me play on their site reinforces the fact that the USA does care about it's peeps getting in over their head.
Over the past couple of years on the blog I've tried to use humor to help make my point. Sorry for getting all preachy here.
